Fume Hood Testing Services

Regular, periodic testing and calibration of laboratory fume hoods is critical to maintaining effective operation and ensuring the health and safety of your research staff. Fume hoods should be tested regularly (recommend annually) or whenever changes are made to either the fume hoods or the laboratory ventilation system.

BME Lab and Science adheres to the ANSI/ASHRAE 110-2016 testing standard, an American National Standard used for performance testing. The ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 110 specifies a quantitative and qualitative test method for evaluating fume containment of laboratory fume hoods (laboratory hoods). This Standard defines a method of testing that applies to many different types of fume hoods, including conventional, bypass, auxiliary air, and variable-air-volume (VAV) laboratory fume hoods.

Face velocity testing by itself is not an accurate measure of performance, nor is it accepted by OSHA as a viable indicator of safety. However, it is not uncommon to find many facilities still limiting their evaluation regimen to face velocity testing alone.

BME’s fume hood testing services provide hospitals, laboratories, pharmaceutical companies, and educational facilities tangible proof that their fume hoods are operating safely and effectively.

Why Test Fume Hoods?

The inhalation of toxic fumes is one of the leading hazards in laboratories. Fume hoods limit exposure to hazardous chemicals and contaminants, so their reliable performance is essential in many laboratory operations. OSHA 1910.1450 requires:

“that fume hoods and other protective equipment are functioning properly and specific measures that shall be taken to ensure proper and adequate performance of such equipment.”
OSHA1910.1450(e)(3)(iii)

Additional benefits for regularly testing fume hoods include:

  • Provides a method of evaluating the fume hood’s ability to contain and exhaust fumes under a set of standard conditions.
  • Serves as a means for comparative analysis of fume hoods.
  • Helps provide criteria for new fume hood procurement.
  • Offers a method to commission and verify performance of new fume hood installations.
  • Manages risk and liability by regularly verifying and documenting that your fume hoods are operating according to established industry performance standards.
  • Serves as a forensic tool to aid in identifying problems or deficiencies with an installed laboratory fume hood HVAC system.
